December 2025 – Promise
Being His Firstfruits & Giving Our Firstfruits
The term “firstfruits” in the Bible does not only refer to the first portion of a harvest; it also represents the best of all. In simple terms, firstfruits are the first and best harvest we can give to God.
Being His Firstfruits
Humans were the pinnacle, the crowning work of God’s creation on earth. No other creature was created in God’s image. Humans have an honourable responsibility: to represent God to all creation.
After redemption, through Christ’s finished work, we have once again become God’s firstfruits in two ways:
- As a new creation
James 1:18 – “He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.”
- As the temple of the Holy Spirit
Romans 8:23 – “Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.”
When it comes to being God’s firstfruits, there is very little we need to do other than accept the free gift of salvation and the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Giving Our Firstfruits
- Wealth
Proverbs 3:9 – “Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase.”
It is important to give cheerfully to the Lord’s work and His workers, offering at least 10% or more of our income.
- Fruit of the womb
One of the greatest firstfruits we can give God is our children. We should recognise that children are God’s blessing given to us for a reason, and it is our duty as parents to dedicate them to God and His purposes for their lives. There is a special blessing in surrendering our offsprings to God in prayer. This does not mean making them Levites or dedicating them to full-time ministry, but it means guiding them to grow in God’s ways and surrendering their lives to His plan which can be different to different children.
Exodus 13:2 – “Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel… it is mine.”
- Firstfruits of the lips
Hebrews 13:15 – “By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.”
Could we take it as a challenge to offer our first words of praise to our Saviour each morning, before speaking or texting to others? While there is no commandment to do this, it would be a wonderful expression of love and devotion to God.
- Firstfruits of time and talents
We are blessed with 24 hours each day. Imagine if we dedicated at least 2 hours 30 minutes daily to God. How can we use our God-given talents to serve His people?
Take a moment to meditate on these questions.
In giving God our firstfruits, we declare not just with words, but with deeds, that God is our provider. God is the giver. So, give God what is rightfully His – give Him both the best and the first.
God bless you and have a fruitful December 2026. Let’s end the year offering praise to our Lord and Saviour. To God be the glory, in Jesus’ name.
Prayer:
Dear Father,
Please help me be the firstfruit You have called me to be, and help me give my firstfruits to honour and glorify You as the Giver of all gifts.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
