Logos
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the word was God. Thus starts the letter of Apostle John.
The “Word” in Greek is translated as Logos. There are various interpretations of Logos, however in Greek context Logos is usually meant to be the principle of order and logic.
Logos is the logic behind an argument, or in other words, the “substance” of an argument. Taken in Biblical context “Logos” is the principle, the meta-knowledge or the framework on which everything exists.
This “Logos” opens up vistas of understanding about God. I would like to point out just two of the amazing meaning of Logos.
“The Word became flesh and dwelt among men” – John 1:14
It is the transformative power of the Word. There is a huge revelation in these 8 words. If the Word (The very Godhood himself) can become flesh, then the flesh (that is you and me) can participate in the divinity of the Word. We have a share or an inheritance in the Trinity, because the Son of Man participated in the humanity by transforming himself to flesh and blood.
The incarnation gives me hope. Christ became the bridge, becoming God and Man. Thus uniting us with God. We too can become like Christ and live like the Son of God.
“And the light shines in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” – John 1:5
Many a time we have this sense that God is absent, that he is silent. King David cries out, “Do not hide your face from me. ” But it is such a joy to see this verse, “The light shines in darkness” Yea, Christian life is not a bed of roses, but, we have this undefeated hope that Christ shines in our life irrespective of darkness, or irrespective of our comprehension.
This reminds me of an incident that took place during the Nazi occupation of Hungary. 3 Jews are sentenced to the gallows and one among the three was a little child. The Nazis were more concerned than usual; to hang a child in front of thousands of onlookers was a difficult thing to do even for them. Someone from the onlookers asks a question “Where is God?”
At the signal, 3 chairs were tipped off, the two men were no longer alive, but the third rope was still moving, the child, too light was still breathing! And so he swung between life and death, in that rope, for more than half an hour, writhing before everyone. And the author Ellie Wiesel continues to write
Behind me, I heard the same man asking:
“For God’s sake, where is God?”
And from within me, I heard a voice answer:
“Where is He? This is where – hanging here from this gallows…”
Dears in Christ, Our God is more able, more powerful, and more sufficient than any thing that can happen to us. Your hope in Christ is not in vain. Your faith in Christ (which is more precious than anything else in this world) will be honored one day when we are caught up with Christ.
He is ever present,
Psalm 46:1-3 – “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.”
He will sustain you! May his Name be glorified.
