Seven Spirits that rested upon Jesus
The seven Spirits that rested upon Jesus are listed in Isaiah 11:2.
And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.
- Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him
The Lord Jesus was the first man upon whom the Spirit rested. Though many prophets and seers had the Spirit of God in their lives, they only had the Spirit of God living in them, He did not rest upon them. There is a huge difference for the Spirit to come in you and for the Spirit to come upon you. When he Spirit comes in you He comes for you, to lead you, guide you to convict you of sin and righteousness but when the same Spirit comes upon you, He comes for others. You then become His blessed instrument to convict others of their sin, guide others in the way of life. The old testament prophets had the Spirit in them, but the Spirit would come upon them only when it was necessary. But the baptism that Jesus offers is different, now the Spirit comes upon you and can rest upon you. The Bible records that Stephen was a man full of the Holy Spirit. It doesn’t mean that the other apostles were lacking the Holy Spirit it means that the Spirit of God was resting upon Stephen in a very special way just like how He rested upon Jesus.
- Spirit of Wisdom
When we have the Spirit of Wisdom it causes our faces to shine.
Ecclesiastes 8:1 … man’s wisdom makes his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed.
The phrase ‘your face will shine’ is most often used to represent honor or promotion amidst your fellow workers or friends or relatives. But it also means that when this Spirit begins to rest upon our lives, it not only brings you honour and favour but it can literally make your faces shine with a divine light and God makes your face to shine when men are around you to affirm everyone that He is with you. It happened to Jesus on the mount of transfiguration and to Stephen when he was being stoned to death.
- Spirit of Understanding
When this particular Spirit begins to rest upon our lives, the word of God becomes alive to us. The disciples who were with Jesus on the road to Emmaus were conversing with the same Jesus who they knew for 3 full years but still the Bible says that their eyes were closed that they did not recognize their Lord.
But later in the same chapter, Jesus does this:
And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures
After that hour the word of God- the scriptures became so alive to the disciples that they were never the same again. They began finding Him in the law and in the psalms. This is what happens when the Spirit of understanding comes upon you- you will then begin to find Jesus in every book of the Bible and soon you will realize and stand in awe and adoration when you know “that it is all about HIM – JESUS.”
- Spirit of Counsel
The wonderful counselor soon becomes your friend who will then guide your day- every second after second. The Spirit’s guidance will be more real to you than the clicking of the clock on your watch. Every second becomes divine, every moment becomes Holy. This is not just prophesying for a few minutes, or knowing something about the future but this is your every moment, every second of your day comes in line fulfilling the will of God for that second of your life. Then you will realize that God has not only planned who you should marry or when you will die but that the GOD of heaven plans your every second of the life you are given. Unfortunately, most Christians will not agree to this statement simply because they have not experienced it but this is what happens when this Spirit of Counsel comes upon you. This Spirit rested upon the life of Philip who was so in time with the Holy Spirit that he would be carried away in the body (not in the spirit, the whole body) and he would find himself in different places. The best of is that you will have no time to waste- not one second.
- Spirit of Might
This Spirit came upon Samson who killed a thousand men just on his own, and it came upon Elijah, who ran faster than the king’s horses. You receive a supernatural strength which is humanly not possible. Jesus was so full of this Spirit that he was alive until he gave the last drop of His blood. Any human being will at least faint after loosing a certain amount of blood from the body. But Jesus even after He lost a lot of blood starting from Gethsamane, then He lost a lot of blood when he was heavily scourged, then he was made to carry the cross all the way to Calvary and he was still bleeding all along the way. Even after all these He was not only breathing, He was crying and interceding for the ones who were hurting him. This is humanly impossible. He was very much alive praying and speaking to John and his mother until He Himself chose to breathe his last breath. It kept him alive until He fulfilled every prophecy. The same happened to Stephen, when He was being stoned to death- now this is not death in a second like in beheading, this is painful, one stone after the other hits you and you slowly die, but look at the mighty Stephen, he is kneeling down interceding for the ones who where stoning him and seeing visions of the Lord. This is what happens when the Spirit of might comes upon you, no matter what, all you see and know and feel is only one thing- it’s the sweet presence of the JESUS.
- Spirit of Knowledge
John 2:24 says, But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men.
This is what happened when the Spirit of Knowledge came upon Jesus. He knew all men. He knew who would love him, who would deny him, who would betray him, everything from the beginning. Jesus could walk into a street and for the first time He would see a short man on the tree and He could call him by his name and say come down. Jesus could look into the heart of the woman at the well and tell her her own secrets. At Gethsamane Jesus who was sincerely praying stood up and walked up to the guards who came to arrest him even before they found him. This is what happens when the Spirit of Knowledge comes upon you- you are never taken by surprise- the knowledge of HOLY SPIRIT becomes the knowledge of your spirit.
- Spirit of the Fear of the Lord
Proverbs 8:13 – The fear of the LORD is to hate evil
When this Spirit comes upon a man, he no longer runs away from sin, but he begins to hate sin- that’s the nature of God. God doesn’t keep himself away from sin He hates it with a complete hatred.
Daniel was so full of this Spirit that he denied the royal food that was offered to idols. The mighty Elijah was so full of this Spirit that he slew 850 false prophets in one evening. Gideon was so full of this Spirit that He went out one night and destroyed all the altars built for strange gods and every high place in the whole city when everyone else were sleeping. There were so many righteous men and women, men like the faithful priest Zechariah, prophetess Anna, prophet Simon- they all went to the temple of Jerusalem but no one else except Jesus who was so full of this Spirit whipped everyone who made it a den of thieves and trashed the whole market place down.
This is what happens when the Spirit of the fear of the Lord comes upon you- you will no longer be able to ignore sin not just in your life but even in the life of others you see.
If JESUS needed these Spirits upon Him, without a shadow of doubt we need to ask the Lord to send it upon us, as Jesus promised,
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works han these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.”
Pray
Spirit of GOD come upon us, rest and remain upon us forever in JESUS name
Amen
May the LORD grant each one of us the grace to be like Him.
