Its not just a psalm
Dear Sisters in Christ
Hope you have been keeping well by His grace. I would like to share something I learnt in the past couple of months. How many of you know Psalm 23 by heart? I know most of you will say yes to it. That is one Psalm that was taught to us by our parents, Sunday school teachers and so on when we were kids. We were made to learn verse by verse and then say the whole Psalm without seeing the Bible. Most of us would have got a meal only after we said the Psalm. I am not going to talk to you about how we learnt the Psalm but how we apply and acknowledge it in our day to day lives.
A few things I love about the Psalm is it talks about our God. The comparison of God leading us through peace and quiet, like a shepherd leading us by the still waters. The way he takes care of us and nurtures us.
It also beautifully explains His character that he makes sure we are on the green pastures and always leads us into the good.
Initially the Psalmist describes God and His character but later he says
4 “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord
Forever.”
Even in our darkest times He is with us, holding us and comforting us. In times when you think no physical or moral support is going to help you, this Psalm just comforts our soul and assures us that He is taking control of the situation and He is with us to comfort us.
My friend met with an accident recently and it was hard for them to start driving again. Everyone wanted to help and kept encouraging saying “Oh you can do it”, “Don’t delay it as it will get tough” and so on. But it did not encourage her at all. She felt the pressure building around her and she cried to the Lord, “Lord I need your help! Only you can help me get back on the roads”. She recited the Psalm and said to the Lord, “It is you who is with me and I will fear no evil”. Slowly she started driving with God’s help. Even today she still lives with a fear when a truck passes by but she still drives because God is with her.
I then realised what our parents taught us while we were kids did not go in vain. Cling on to Him and you will see His hand working a miracle in your life. Pass what you have learnt to the next generation and pray for them because they need it as much as you need them.
May God bless you and your household.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
We pray for your protection and guidance in our life. We pray that even though we walk through the valley of shadow and death, we will fear no evil for you are with me. Help us to cling on to you always.
Amen
