Comfort in Suffering

June 2, 2017

This is my comfort in my suffering, your word has given me life. Psalms 119: 50

Dears in Christ,

Greetings to you in Jesus’ name.

Blaise Pascal once wrote, “A trifle consoles us because a trifle displeases us.” One meaning that could be derived from this is that we are moved by small things. Small issues upset us, make us bitter, vengeful, angry and removes the awareness of God’s presence from us.

King David was troubled from many fronts. His life was not very peaceful like that of His son King Solomon. He was ignored by his brothers, chased by Saul, driven out of his own kingdom, had to mourn the death of at least 2 of his children. He was cursed by Shimei, and his own confidant betrayed him and he had to live with philistines for some time. Even when he was very old, Adonijah set himself up as King realizing the oncoming power vacuum. With this context if we look at Psalms 119: 50. It gives us a different perspective, being hounded by everyone, he sought God’s promises. Because he realized that they were the true source of life.

Where do you get your comfort from? Where do you run to when everyone seems against you? Some derive the comfort from their friends or partners or parents. But the best comfort and life itself comes from God’s promises for you. None of the human words can give life. Let us get comfort from God alone.

We are comforted so that we may be able to comfort others. There are many in the world desperate for comfort. Comfort from loneliness, from disappointment, from brokenness and diseases. Let us point them towards God the source of all comfort.

Let us pray,

Dear God, You are with me, in our hearts through faith. You have given us this promise, “He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”

Help me to be a pointer of your love. Let people know your love and comfort through me. In Jesus’ precious name I pray. Amen.
