Are you Joyful?

April 8, 2016

“I wanted to figure out why I was so busy, but I couldn’t find the time to do it”, said Todd Stocker, a writer and a pastor. His words seem to be true in this swift world. Everyone is busy in this life – busy working for their family and children, busy making money for need and greed, busy enjoying the pleasures of the world, busy worrying about tomorrow and even a child that goes to kindergarten is a victim of this and has got its own worries.

Being busy in this life leaves you with either one of the two trace. One, it constantly distracts you from the calling and purpose that God has in your life. Two, it moulds you and makes you perfect to fit in the will of God. But good or bad, it depends on what you are busy with.

We know a family of two sisters and a brother who lived in the time of Jesus. Once when Jesus visited their home we see the two sisters concerned about different things. Martha was the one who received Jesus in to the house and when Jesus came in to the house Mary, her sister sat at the feet of Jesus and was hearing the words that Jesus spoke.

Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard His word. Luke 10:39

Martha also was listening to the words of Jesus but the bible goes on saying, Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to Him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. Did not Mary know that Martha is working alone to serve the Lord Jesus? Did not Mary know that it is her duty to help her sister? In spite of knowing these facts, the Lord Jesus answered,

Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:41-42

What was that Jesus giving importance to? What was that Jesus considered more important and needed than the facts of daily family life? It is the Word of God. Though Mary knew that she had to help Martha prepare food for Jesus, she chose to sit at the feet of Jesus listening to His words because she also had known that Jesus will leave their home soon and she never wanted to lose any of His words while He was still in their house. Did not Martha know this? Did not she know that the words that Jesus speaks are eternal?

Yes, my dear sisters. Jesus wants us and appreciates us to sit at His feet to listen to His word, rather than to do things in the ways of facts and emotions of the world. Mary did not do anything for Jesus but was left with peace and joy. And though Martha was doing all things for Jesus, was not joyful. In spite of all her hard work, she failed to know the heart of Jesus. Your true joy lies in knowing the heart of Jesus and receiving the words of eternal life from Him. Peter rightly said to Jesus,

“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” John 6:68
