Let your lights shine

December 14, 2015

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:16

The Bible tells in Acts 9:36 to 43 about a disciple, in the town of Joppa, named Tabitha, which, translated means Dorcas. She was full of good works and acts of charity. And in particular, the Bible says that Dorcas made tunics and other garments for the widows while she was with them.

Dorcas, who was doing such good deeds became ill and died. All the widows who received good deeds from Dorcas, were weeping for her, showing tunics and other garments that she made for them while she was with them.

This news was informed to the disciple Peter who was in Lydda which was near Joppa, by two brothers. So Peter rose and went with them. And when he arrived, they took him to the upper room. He knelt down and prayed; and turning to the body he said, “Tabitha, arise.” The Bible tells that she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up.

Many in Joppa had died. But only Dorcas’ death was informed to Peter. The reason for that was her good deed. The Bible teaches us in Matthew 5:16, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

Also the Bible teaches us in Isaiah 1:17, “learn to do good”. As we do good deeds our Heavenly Father is glorified. And as we do good deeds, the Lord delivers us from our trials and temptations. This is what we learn from the life of Dorcas.

Let us display our testimonial life with good deeds. Our testimonial life will lead many to the flock of Christ. Our testimonial life and good deeds will lead the people, who do not know Christ, to Christ.
